The main inspiration for this piece was to create a new corporation for my SPACERS world: ROXUS Ore and Refinement… I realize now that refinement is spelled wrong in the art :( . I imagine ROXUS being the type of corporation with zero regard for their larger impact on the universe. Planets harbor important resources at their core and the quickest way to get to them is to blow them to smithereens. Here we see a “planet cracker” after it has recently blown up a small moon. Smaller ships shuttle about, cracking open remaining asteroids and planetary debris for precious resources.
My work is typically very character focused and so I wanted to try to branch out and do a purely environmental word-building piece. I pulled some ship design inspiration from sketches in my physical sketchbook, it was satisfying to feel like I already had some designs ready to go.
One of my favorites parts in the illustration process is having the rough sketch complete and getting to slowly take my time rendering every little screw and panel. I also enjoy the play between the chartreuse and purple.
Roxus in its brat era.
